MAYOR’S MESSAGE FOR CHRISTMAS
“It is a great pleasure for Mrs Manning and me to express our sincere appreciation of the services of all those who have assisted with the numerous voluntary organisations which contribute to the rich community life of the city,” said the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) in a Christmas message yesterday. “We are deeply conscious that a great number of associations render practical and sympathetic assistance to our less fortunate citizens and to our handicapped children.
“On the other hand, the city is fortunate in having associations for the encouragement of the arts and the necessary standards of value in social life.
“By such services, a social environment is developed in which the human personality can flower and community life is enriched. “The city is also experiencing economic progress which is indicated by the extension
of our manufacturing industries and by the new and up-to-date buildings in the centre of the city. As the festive season is with us, it is exhilarating to see the decoration of the streets by the business firms.
“To all citizens, we offer the compliments of the season and our sincere wish for a prosperous New Year. To all those kind friends who have sent us a Christmas message, we tender our thanks for their kind thoughts.”
