UNIVERSITY READERS

Recruitment Now Direct

The new university salary scales (partially approved) enable the University of Canterbury to have 15 per cent of its staff in the reader grade —between senior lecturer and professorial status. The Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips) said yesterday this was a gain which should help to retain staff and attract new members. For the first time the university could recruit directly into the reader grade. Previously staff must be promoted to it

Professor Phillips said the new reader salary range was £2BOO to £3300. The new scales recommended by the University Salaries Committee had been approved up to reader level. The Government had yet to announce salaries for professors, although it had received the recommendation.
