Close Finishes In Yachting Trials

The highlights of some interesting yacht racing over the week-end were the tight finishes in the P class Tauranga Cup trials, which have now ended, and in the Junior Cherub trials, which have just started.

The Junior Cherubs have three more races next weekend. Although Casino has so far won all three races sailed, this boat’s score is a trifle flattering because two races were won by margins of only 18 and 19 seconds.

A disappointing feature of the Junior Cherub trials was the reduced entry from last year, 13 to seven, even though there are more boats sailing in the class.

A fine performance was put up by the young Charteris Bay crew, M. Prestney and R. Fisher, sailing Cherubye, which was launched for the series. They sailed the third race on Sunday afternoon without a spinnaker to finish fourth, two minutes behind the winner.

The final P class Tauranga Cup trial was sailed in light conditions on the Estuary yesterday morning, when there was a near photo finish, with only one second between each of the second, third and fourth place-getters.

As a result of these trials the club representatives (subject to official confirmation) will be:—Walmakariri, Supreme (M. Willson); Mount Pleasant, Fidget (B. Trethewey): Christchurch, Toby (P. Collingood); Pleasant Point, Elusive (A. Smith); Charteris Bay, Maureen (J. Fisher); Canterbury R. Class Squadron, Taku (I. Jackson). Results of the trials were:— Junior Cherub
