WARMER WATER FOR SWIMMERS

The popularity of the St. Albans swimming pool will know no bounds after the heating plant comes into use on Saturday. The first swimmers to revel in the warmer water will be competitors in the Canterbury finals of the national teleprinter contest.

The installation of the heating plant is another milestone in the history of the progressive St. Albans club. The pavilion was erected in 1956 and the filtration plant was installed in 1961. Dressing sheds were built two years later and now the heating plant completes the picture. Heating the pool has been a project that the club has had in mind for some time; last winter the executive decided that it was time to act.

The purchase price of the plant was £1350. but associated costs brought the total to about £2OOO. The plant has been sited behind the filter

house on the western side of the pool. The St. Albans club is one of the oldest in Canterbury; the St. Albans School was the original headquarters. The club has a tremendous record of public service through its activities in the teaching field. The St. Albans annual learn-to-swim week attracts bigger numbers every year and the warmer water in the pool will probably accelerate this growth. Last year the sessions attracted an average of 35 adults and 350 children a day and on one memorable day there were 450 children at the pool to receive instruction.
