Disastrous Flood

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) FLORENCE, Nov. 4. The rain-swollen Arno river broke its banks today and engulfed this famous Renaissance city and dozens of outlying communities in a disastrous flood, the Associated Press reports. Mud and debris spilled into the entire historic area of Florence around the Ponte Vecchio, one of the glories of the Renaissance, in the worst Arno flood since World War 11. Hundreds of residents fled to the upper floors of their homes or to higher parts of the city.

The flood burst watermains and short-circuited electric power and communcations cables. Whole sections of the city are without drinkable water and electricity.
