Arrest Likely In Soutter Case
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 4. Police inquiries into the death of the Devonport girl, Miss Lesley Margaret Soutter, aged 19, have been intensified within the last few days to a stage where an arrest is imminent.
This was confirmed late tonight by the Assistant Commissioner of Police at Auckland (Mr E. W. Mahood). He said the arrest could be expected within a few days. Mr Mahood, questioned a fortnight ago, hinted of the prospect of early developments on the case. This followed the finding in a city pawnshop of Miss Soutter’s three - diamond engagement
ring, two dress rings and a cigarette lighter. Miss Soutter left her job at a Queen street coffee lounge at 9.30 a.m., on March 29. The last information of her whereabouts came from a friend who said that he left her at the Auckland bus terminal half an hour later. The decomposed remains of her naked body were found in bushes behind the Badminton Hall in Gillies avenue, Epsom, on May 31, by a detective.
An inquest into the cause of her death was opened on June 29 before the Auckland Coroner (Mr A. D. Copeland) and adjourned.
