Roman Consul Fit For Wanganui

“The Press” Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH. Roman Consul, Tyrol and Saturnian all worked well at Awapuni yesterday in preparation for the first day of the Wanganui meeting.

Roman Consul is sure to be well in favour for the F. F. Newman Handicap, especially after his good race at Foxton in the open sprint. Yesterday, the four-year-old worked over seven furlongs on the inside trial in Imin 32 2-ssec, the last three in 40sec. He could have done better and, as he will return to a mile, and a quarter this week, he should excel. The best half-mile of the morning was credited to Teri and Synair. They took 48 4-5 sec, the last three furlongs in 35 4-ssec. Teri is forward to resume at Wanganui this week. Synair, which is not engaged this week, shows above average promise. Both Ways and Illumined were travelling well, with Both Ways a shade in front, after

half a mile in 49 3-ssec, the last three in 36sec. Both look full of promise. Might left half a mile behind in 50sec and took 37sec for his last three furlongs. Gold Mint, which will do better than he showed at Foxton the first time he strikes firm ground, sprinted freely over three furlongs in 36 3-ssec. He will retain his admirers for Wanganui. Talavera, which is, progressing well, covered three furlongs in 40sec and Honey Babe took 40 2-ssec. Warm Up ran half a mile in 54 3-ssec, and Prince d’Amour went faster to record 50 l-ssec, although he was easing at the finish and took 37 2-ssec for his last three.

Working on the course proper. Tyrol and Governor General-enhanced their Wanganui prospects when they covered a mile in Imin 54sec, the last three furlongs in 43 l-ssec. Tyrol has improved recently and will be hard to beat in the Tally-Ho Steeplechase. Saturnian is in the same race. He has recovered from his bruised stifle and worked over a mile in Imin 54sec, the last three furlongs in 43sec. Rain would improve his Wanganui chances. Bairam schooled well with Arlington over the brush hurdles and then Bairam ran alone over six furlongs in Imin 24 2-ssec. He hit out keenly and is a likely improver for the Okehu Hack Hurdles. Black Tudor took 42 2-ssec for three furlongs—his first serious test since he resumed after a breakdown threatened. He is well above average.

Dervish beat Tarim decisively over three furlongs in a smart 38sec.

Ichtar and Captain Sam led Golden Prince over the final stages of three furlongs in 38 2-ssec.
