TRIAL FOR EPSOM

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)

The Waikato-trained mare, Chantal, will become a hot favourite for the Epsom Handicap, to be run over one mile at Randwick on October 1, if she wins at the course today. Chantal, which has 8-4 in the Epsom Handicap, will carry 141 b more in today’s Glenbrook Handicap, also a mile. Chantal has already been heavily backed for the Epsom Handicap and in doubles with fancied Metropolitan Handicap candidates. The Chatsworth ll—Tenderfoot mare, which is trained by J. P. Hayes, made a brilliant start to her Australian campaign when she won the Bank Holiday Handicap (one mile) at Randwick on August 1. She has performed well since, and will start favourite in today’s field. Chantal, which won the Adams Memorial mile at Trentham in January, will be ridden by the leading jockey, G. Moore, who also has the offer of the Epsom Handicap mount.
