Nelson’s £12 Million Reclamation Plan
I New Zealand Press Association)
NELSON, August 30.
A £l2 million reclamation project for Nelson’s Haven, a mud expanse at low tide, was disclosed at a public meeting last night. The plan envisages the reclamation of 1750 acres.
The Nelson City Council, which is planning the venture, has not yet officially endorsed the project, but present thinking is that the work could start within two years. Much preparatory work, including the passing of special legislation for the raising of loans, remains to be done. But the meeting was told that the concept was more than just a pipe-dream. The city had to expand and it could go in only two directions beyond Stoke and into valuable farmlands or on to “new” land from the sea. On the present rate of population growth. Nelson would have to accommodate
at least 55,000 people by 2000, double today’s population. The City Council’s scheme is based on a 35-year programme.
