Lambs And Ewes Shot At Halswell
Twenty-four lambs and six ewes, valued at more than £lOO, were shot on a Halswell farm on Sunday evening. They were discovered yesterday by the owner, Mr H. L. W. Cox, of Templetons road, Halswell.
Mr Cox said yesterday he felt that youths travelling in a car had killed the sheep. They had used a .22 rifle, possibly with hollow-nosed bullets, and had crossed at least two paddocks to get to the middle of the farm where the sheep were, about a quarter of a mile from his house. He said most of the lambs had been shot once, through the heart. Several of the dead ewes had bullet wounds all over the earcase. Some had been shot between 20 and 30 times. Mr Cox said he was at
home all day on Sunday, but heard no shooting. It was possible that the rifles had telescopic sights and silencers. The Addington police have taken several of the carcases to extract bullets for examination, and are also searching for shells on the property. Anyone who saw a car near the farm on Sunday, or who could give information on the shooting, is asked to get in touch with the Addington police or the Central Police Station.
