Holder And Host In Marist Final
The holder, Sacred Heart College (Auckland), and Xavier College (Christchurch) scored convincing wins on the first day of the tenth annual Harist Brothers’ Colleges' tournament at Gamblins road on Saturday and will meet in the final today.
Xavier scored four tries to nil against St. Paul’s (Lower Hutt) and won. 20-9. Sacred Heart also kept Its line intact while scoring three tries against St. Bernard’s (Auckland). Sacred Heart won, 14-8. SACRED HEART 14: K. Havill, W. Carlson, J. Miskell tries: .1. Miskell a conversion and P. Peacocke a dropped goal. ST. BERNARD'S 6: C. Moore two penalties. Sacred Heart was clearly superior in all phases of play. Its back-line moved well as a neat well-drilled unit, with P Peacocke, S. Coleman, W. Carlson, and J. Miskill outstanding. Sacred Heart’s forward pack played most intelligently. It was ably led by the captain, B. Donnelly, who also secured a number of tight heads. J. Porter and K. Havill were others to stand out. Sacred Heart’s success lay in the ability of the back-line to run hard and straight. St. Bernard’s, although beaten, was by no means disgraced. The team played bravely in the second half and
held Sacred Heart at bay for long periods by sheer determination. M. Reedy, B. Golder, J. Quin and K. Bowers all had good games. C. Moore had a bad day with his kicking, missing eight attempts, all from reasonably handy positions. Referee: Mr A. F. Gurnsey. XAVIER COLLEGE 20: W. Brown. P„ McGlinchey and P. Anticich (2) tries; B. O’Byrne two penalties and a conversion. ST. PAUL'S 9: K. Moran three penalties. Scoring four tries to nil, Xavier College easily beat St. Paul’s by 20 points to nine. From the outset, Xavier displayed a willingness to give the ball plenty of air and these tactics paid off handsomely. The Xavier College back-line functioned well and displayed its arts to the full. B. Cox, P Anticich, P. McGlinchey, and P. Consedine all had good games. W. Brown, Xavier’s captain, was a good pack leader and set a fine example to the younger members of his team. B. O’Byrne and R. Clough were others worthy of mention.
The St. Paul’s forwards were outclassed by their opposite and never really looked like gaining ascendency, this problem being responsible for the many hopeless situations they found themselves in throughout the match. K. Moran, J. Leach, and G. Thorpe were St. Paul’s best players. Referee: Mr H. P. Kearney.
