REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY Wellington Forwards Outplay Otago
(N.Z. Press Association)
The dash and highly-skilled efficiency of the Wellington forwards overwhelmed Otago at Carisbrook on Saturday. Wellington won 17-0, having led 11-0 at half-time.
Wellington scored four tries, three by the Maori All Black winger. P. J. Myers, and one by G. : H. Catley, while M. W. Milliment kicked a conversion and a penalty goal. Otago was fortunate that the Wellington backs did not have the skill to match its forwards or the score might have been one of really major proportions. The inside backs, B. A. Coulter and G. F. Kember, kicked regularly and at many times when the Otago defences were well scattered.
The Wellington forwards completely overshadowed Otago in line-outs, rucks and loose, with I. N. Mac Ewan giving a superb display of high jumping and catching in the line-outs, as well as showing outstanding general all-round form. He was the pick of the Wellington forwards but none of the others, nota.bly P. Delaney. K. F. Gray, and J. M. Finn, were far behind. Taranaki scraped a 10-9 win over Manawatu at New Plymouth. It was a somewhat lucky win, for Manawatu had the home s>:de pinned in its own half for most of the second spell. One of the few occasions Taranaki broke out was when the winger, L. Clarke, ran from
half-way, beat several Manawatu defenders and scored between the posts. For Taranaki, T. D. Jenkins and Clarke scored tries, and B. j. O’Dowda converted two. For Manawatu, A. Cornelius scored a try and J. D. P. Taitoko kicked two penalty goals. Thames Vall'ey beat North Otago, 19-14, at Paeroa. Play mainly centred around bright movements developing from individual play. For Thames Valley, tries were scored by E. A. Aislabie and B. Woodmass. T. E. Shaw kicked two penalty goals and two conversions and Aisiabie kicked a penalty. Tries for North Otago were scored by K. McKenzie, B. Potts and P. Ford who also converted a try and kicked a penalty. Bay of Plenty won the Coronation Shield for the third time in 10 years when it beat Waikato, 19-6, at Whakatane.
The Bay forwards, with P. E. Scott and R. J. Conway always prominent, were the architects of victory in almost every department particularly in driving from the line-outs.
For Bay of Plenty, E. Beattie and M. J. Doherty scored tries, and W: J. Potae kicked two conversions and three penalty goals. For Waikato, D. Flavell kicked two penalty goals.
Auckland B beat Horowhenua, 25-9, at Levin. For Auckland, tries were scored by P. Phorburn, A. Clark, and J. Carter, while B. Cooper kicked a pen-
alty and two conversions. Horowhenua’s points came from a try by C. D. Gebbie. and two penalties by J. Feymour. Wellington B coasted to a comfortable 22-3 win over Bush at Wellington. For Wellington, tries were scored by Adams, Lendrun and Heather. O’Donnell kecked three penalties and two conversions. For Bush. G. Humphrey kicked a penalty.
