Papanui H.S. Concert
The Papanui High School’s annual concert was given on Wednesday evening. The programme opened with selections from the orchestra conducted by Mr E. P. Rowe. Their performance was a creditable one.
The highlight of the evening was the brass band, which combined precision and accuracy with a feeling for their music.
An operetta “Down in the Valley.” with words by Arnold Sungaard and music by Kurt Weill, was produced by Mrs W. Russell. It told the story of Brack Weaver, a country lad from an American mid-western town who died on the gallows as the result of killing Thomas Bouche, his rival for the love of Jennie Parsons. Both Kevin Neate, as Brack Weaver, and Marlene Gargiulo, as Jennie Parsons, had quite pleasant voices.
