VISCOUNTS’ REPAIRS
Early Return To Service The remaining two National Airways Corporation Viscounts in which metal faults were found in the tailpieces should be flying again by the week-end. A third airliner in which a similar fault was found is already back in service- It was repaired by replacing the faulty member with a sound piece from one of the two machines still grounded. A second replacement part of one of the other aircraft arrived in Christchurch from Britain last evening and this airliner should be flying again on Wednesday. Fittings for the third airliner are expected to reach Christchurch on Wednesday and it should be ready for service on Saturday. The British Aircraft Corporation which sent the replacements to the Harewood engineering workshops of N.A.C. will study the faulty parts in which hairline cracks were detected and will try to establish any possible relationship between the fault and operating conditions in New Zealand. ,
If the aircraft were all operating by the week-end, the airline would be able to cope adequately with the August school holiday rush, said N.A.C.’s Christchurch branch manager (Mr J. E. Davies) yesterday.
