Africa
, Sir,—“S]ide into Darkness” is the name of an arresting book just published by an American journalist, Blaine Littell, who, after a fivemonth tour in Africa, paints a despairing and at times horrifying picture of the newlyemerging State. His conclusion is that nearly everything the white man did is failing, because he left too soon. Another 100, perhaps 500, years were required. There is a population explosion owing to the natives’ worship of fertility: land schemes have failed because of inefficiency: tribal loyalties. ' and breakup of government machinery. He concludes by saying that the Dark Continent will always be dark. The crumbling roads, weedinfested plantation, etc., clearly show that nature will shortly obliterate signs of the white man’s temporary presence. What a contrast to the dream of a multi-racial Commonwealth!—Youre. etc., • V. WILKINSON. Ashburton, August 8, 1966.
