Fire Board Staff
Sir, —I observe that the Christchurch Fire Board is well under strength. Because of primitive and almost preIndustrial Revolution conditions, the service is not attracting the number of recruits which might be expected to a job of this type. The staff shortage may bring the Christchurch Fire Board to realise that few twentiethcentury men are willing to work in excess of 80 hours a week for less than 5s an hour. It is perhaps fortunate for the Fire Board that its electoral structure is not such that the
[general public are able directly to express their I opinion. Ratepaying and premium - paying citizens might well feel that the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Brigade is not being run as efficiently as might be expected and act accordingly.— Yours, etc., PROTECTORS. August 3, 1966.
[The chairman of the Metropolitan Fire Board (Mr W. R. Campbell) replies: “It has not been my practice to reply to anonymous correspondents. However, the writer is invited to contact me personally to clear up the gross inaccuracies relating to hours of work and other matters that are referred to in his letter.”]
