COUNCIL UPSET

Told To See Commissioner

(N.Z. Press Association)

DUNEDIN, August 2.

Members of the Dunedin City Council criticised a Loans Board ruling that they should consult the district commissioner of works, Dunedin, on prices to be paid for off-street parking sites. The Local Authorities Loans Board told the council that only £400,000 of the council’s application for £600,000 would be granted. A special condition was that the council should consult the district commissioner.

The Mayor (Mr R. J. Calvert) said the council had no quarrel with the district commissioner.

“The problem is entirely from head office,” he said. “I feel this is a negation of local body control when we are not allowed to exercise our own judgment”
