PHILIPPINES AMBUSH

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MANILA, July 18. Suspected Communist huks today shot and killed a town mayor and five others from ambush while the victims were travelling on a highway on the way to Manila to attend a conference called by President Marcos. The President immediately told the military zone commander in the area to throw a full battalion into the manhunt. The shooting occurred as President Marcos ordered a change in the Government campaign against Communist huks. President Marcos, who is also Defence Secretary, ordered authorities yesterday to reduce the number of armed soldiers assigned in huk-threatened areas and replace them with Army construction engineers.

Hearing Adjourned.—The hearing of charges against seven former directors and two former officers of H. G. Palmer (Consolidated), Ltd., was further adjourned in Central Court today. It now will resume on August 2. Sydney, July 18.
