COUNCIL’S ROADING DECISION QUERIED

At its estimates meeting last month, the Walmairi County Council deleted £11,531 worth of reconstruction and widening work on Johns road. The wisdom of this decision was queried by Cr. A. A. Adcock at last night's meeting of the council. Some councillors might by now have had time to consider the consequences of deferring the work, said Cr. Adcock.

The chairman (Mr 0. C. Mitchell) said that he doubted whether Cr. Adcock was in order in discussing something that had been approved by the council, but would allow him to continue, briefly. “I don’t want to do that This is of such importance that it warrants consideration by the council,” said Cr. Adcock.

On Mr Mitchell's suggestion, he agreed to refer the question to the next meeting of the works committee.

Cr. R. C. Neville asked if the council could now tell the National Roads Board that the council would have £9OOO in board funds that were not needed. Other local bodies could use the money. The clerk (Mr K. Maclachlan) asked if the works committee should not have another look at the over-all reading programme. There had, for example, been mention of possible work on Dickies road. This, too, was referred to the works committee.
