TRAFFIC PLAN

Subsidy Rise Sought

A direct approach to the National Roads Board for increased subsidies for works that must be undertaken immediately in connexion with the master transport plan was approved by the City Council last evening. Certain works associated with the plan were not being done, in particular the purchase of some land, the city development committee reported. The council had bought some land required for the Rossall street and Antigua street • Strickland street realignments and was being asked to buy more for both and the Hills road realignment. From informal discussions with the Ministry of Works it was believed that there would be a good chance of obtaining an additional subsidy for these works’ on the ground that to expedite them would relieve other already congested routes. As an example, the committee said the upgrading of Rossall street could provide some immediate relief to Fendalton road.
