LYTTELTON RATES

Water Charge Increased An unchanged general rate of 2s 9jd in the £ was recommended by the Lyttelton Borough Council’s finance committee in a report presented at a meeting of the council last evening. The report was adopted. The report also recommended that the water rate for Ordinary supplies be increased by 2d to 5Jd in the £, with a minimum payment of £l. For all buildings other than dwelling-houses the rate is to be 2}d, with a minimum of 10s. Ships are to get water at 5s a thousand gallons. The library rate is to remain at l)d in £. Diamond Harbour section owners are to pay a sanitation fee of £ll a section, an increase of £2.

In presenting the estimates, Cr. R. H. Duff said the increase of 2d in the £ for the water rate was the first increase for 10 years. It was brought about by the increased demand, greater expenses, and the necessity to repay a loan of £27,000. The increase would mean payment of an extra 15s for the average Lyttelton house.
