No Surprises In Badminton Singles

The quarter-final matches in the singles championship went as expected in the women’s invitation badminton tournament at Wanganui last evening.
The two top-seeded Japanese and two top Indonesians reached the semi-finals.
Miss N. Takagi (Japan) quickly disposed of her Indonesian opponent, Miss R. Kustiah, 11-8, 11-3, while the No. 2 Japanese singles player. Miss F. Yokoi, was too strong for Miss A. Bairstow (England) —the only European to reach the quarter-finals. There was a surprise in the doubles when the Americans. Misses T. Barinaga and C. Jensen, beat the Japanese pair. Misses H. Amano and T. Takahashi, 9-15, 15-11, 18-16. Results: SINGLES Quarter-finals. —A. Kawilarang (Indonesia) beat K. Gotoh (Japan), 11-4. 10-12, 11-8; N. Takagi (Japan) beat R. Kustiah (Indonesia), 11-8, 11-3: F. Yoko: (Japan) beat A. Bairstow (England) 11-7. 11-5: B. Minarni
(Indonesia) beat M. Yokoyama (Japan), 11-2, 11-4. DOUBLES Quarter-finals. —B. Minarni and P. Kustiah (Indonesia) beat F. Yokoi and M. Yokoyama (Japan), 9-13, 15-8, 15-6; M Marrand and J. Horton (England) beat J. Miller and S. Whit taker (Canada), 15-6, 15-7; T. Barinaga and C. Jensen (United States) beat H. Amano and T. Takahashi (Japan), 9-15, 15-9. 15-7; N. Takagi and K. Gotoh (Japan) beat A. Bairstow and V. Smith (England), 18-13, 15-3.
