AIRLINE ENVISAGES FARE REDUCTION
(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 8. The British Overseas Airways Corporation expected to be operating big jets by 1970 and this could mean a 30 per cent to 40 per cent reduction in air fares for some travellers, said the airline’s general manager, for the eastern region (Mr B. Bampfylde) These large jets worked on 30 per cent reduced operating costs a seat mile. His personal preference would be to pass this on by a substantial reduction for sections of the travelling public that it was desired to increase rather than make a blanket cut of a much lower figure. A decision on 8.0.A.C. future jets was almost imminent, he said. These large aircraft would seat some 375 passengers and would be first used on the North Atlantic routes, with other routes not far behind. He was apprehensive about airport passengers’ handling facilities, as they could only barely handle present numbers.
He thought it would be "some time” before the large jets would come to New Zealand, as an essential requirement was a large population at either end of the route.
New Zealand could not yet generate these numbers, he said.
