Western Samoa Appeals For Food
(New Zealand Press Association) APIA, April 8. The food shortage, the result of the crop devastation by the hurricane in February, is now making itself felt in many villages and relief supplies in Apia are almost exhausted.
The Western Samoan Government has now asked the New Zealand Red Cross to start regular food shipments immediately. The Government has asked for 10 tons of flour, five tons
of rice and one ton of milk powder to be shipped every fortnight. It is expected that the shortage of food will last till September at least. A World Food Programme official, Mr R. Arnolda, is here making a survey of the population’s needs to rehabilitate themselves.
He said today it was obvious that the Samoan economy would be seriously affected by the hurricane and he envisaged assistance from the World Food Programme to replant banana plantations and provide food. Mr Arnolda said that he hoped to see the programme in Samoa by June 1.
