POSSIBLE DELAY
New Y.M.C.A. Hostel
“Unless compensation amountiong to more than £lOO,OOO is received by the association for the headquarters building in Cambridge terrace, plans for a new hostel may be held up for several years,” says the annual report of the Christchurch Y.M.C.A.
“A deputation was appointed to wait upon the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake), and it appears that a decision is imminent.
“It would be true to say,” the report continues, “that at no previous time in the history of the association have there been such complex financial difficulties to be faced. The whole prospect of the new building, the sale of the Montreal street site, and the submissions to the Government for compensation have involved constant planning and adjustment of finances.” The financial statement estimates that a balance of more than £17,000 will have to be found if the present headquarters building raises no more than the market value of £70,000.
