Games Prospects Win Bouts

The three contenders for the Empire Games boxing team won their preliminary bouts. Two of these were very even, one decision being greeted with a storm of boos.

The welter-weight contender, K Sheehan (Ashburton), had to fight hard to beat W. Atkins (Crichton Cobbers). Atkins, a southpaw, had a very fast left hook that Sheehan found difficult to counter, and which dropped him for an eightcount in the third and last round. Sheehan scored nearly all his points with a solid straight left, while a short right chop was very effective in taking the sting from Atkins in the last round. Sheehan won a unanimous paints verdict. Rugged, But Crude P. Enright (Southland) proved himself a rugged boxer, but crude on defence, in a rousing bout with T. Dunn (Welington), the national light middle-weight champion. Dunn tied Enright in the in-fighting, but pushed his blows too much instead of punching cleanly. Enright slogged away in round three, rousing the crowd to a frenzy, but Dunn scored more points although his blows lacked power. Dunn gained a split decision. B. Kendall (Canterbury), the New Zealand featherweight champion, dropped A. Emerson (Oamaru) in the first round with a hard right.

Emerson continued gamely, but Kendall coolly punched him to the body and with lefts and hard rights to the face until the referee (Mr H. Shields) stopped the fight. The end came after 2min 4sec. H.
