S.A. BOXER GAOLED
Van Heerden Sentenced (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) PRETORIA. The South African light heavy-weight boxing champion, G. van Heerden, was sentenced to a year in gaol yesterday after being found guilty at a re-trial on a charge of culpable homicide. Van Heerden was given a similar sentence last November at his original trial on the same charge which arose out of the death of a man in a car accident in August. He appealed in December, and on a legal technicality relating to evidence as to the cause of the man’s death the sentence was set aside. The judge referred the case back to the original magistrate with a submission from the Attorney-General that the sentence be increased. The Magistrate, Mr A. Mouton, said yesterday that the sentence originally imposed was sufficient.
