WOMENS FOURS

Champion’s Hard Day (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The defending champion, Mrs G. Smith, of Kaiapoi, had a testing time on the third day of the New Zealand women’s bowls fours championships in Wellington yesterday. Mrs Smith lost both her section matches—by the large margin of 7-23 to Mrs T. Standen (Wilton) and 17-22 to Mrs R. Walker (Shannon). Fortunately for the Kaiapoi four their form on the earlier days was much better. Their wins in the first four rounds enabled them to qualify for the post section play, starting today. A former national champion, Mrs S. Winstanley (Marewa), made a spirited comeback to qualify. Beaten in the first two rounds. Mrs Winstanley secured her place by winning her next four matches. Seven fours qualified for the post-section play without losing a match—Mrs A. Winiata (Otaki Central). Mrs A. Evans (Rocky Nook). Mrs T. McKechie (Lower Hutt), Mrs J. Wilkie (Lower Hutt), Mrs D. Staoles (Rocky Nook), Mrs M. Baker (Lower Hutt), and Mrs C. Turner (North East Valley). Altogether there are 74 qualifiers. They included Mrs M. Donnelly (Fendalton), with five wins, and Mrs Smith, four wins.
