January 8 FLOODS.—The “Timaru Herald" of the sth inst. says:—One day last week the telegraph posts in the bed of the Waitaki river were carried away by the flood—of course also breaking the wires and stopping all communication with the North. A like mishap occurred about the same time in the bed of the Rakaia. We hear that means are in active pro-

gress to re-establish the telegraphic communication. The poles, which had been washed away near the Rakaia, will be replaced by larger posts, calculated to withstand the action of floods. A working party proceeded to the point of rupture last week, and unless further damage has been done to the line, in the neighborhood of the Rangitata river, it will not be long before the wire is again in operation.
