Maj. Holliday Dead
Great Britain lost one of its most successful owners and breeders last month through the death of Major Lionel Holliday. He was 85. Since 1950 he topped the owners’ list in 1956, 1961, and 1962, and he was the leading breeder in 1956 and 1962. In 1962 he won £70.206 as an owner and £72,269 as a breeder. That was the year Hethersett won the St. Leger land was one of those brought down in the Epsom Derby. The mare on which Major Holliday founded his wonderfully successful breeding dynasty was Lost Soul. From her he bred the mare Phase which was by Windsor Lad. She became the dam of Neasham Belle.
Neasham Belle was by Nearco as also were six of the other winners out of Phase— Netherton Maid, Neath, Narrator, No Pretender, and None Nicer. One of five winners bred by Netherton Maid was Chats- : worth IL a successful stallion in New Zealand. ! Arragon. a son of Neasham Belle, is also siring fast horses here.
