TROTTING Guyfa Picked To Win Greymouth Cup Tonight

It is expected that Guyfa will improve a sound record on her present campaign when she contests the Greymouth Cup at Victoria Park Raceway tonight.

Guyfa will try for her second win as a twomiler on the West Coast circuit in the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second night of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s

New Year meeting.

Mr B. Maeale’s Fallacy mare was the runner-up to Epona over 13 furlongs in the Victoria Park Raceway Handicap on Tuesday night. At her previous start she was successful over two miles in the Forsyth and Masters Handicap at Reefton. Shadydale, the beaten favourite in the Victoria Park Raceway Handicap, might be the hardest for Guyfa to beat. That was his first lapse iff a solid patch of form. Beforehand he had three successive seconds on his record and the most recent of those placings was behind Guyfa at Reefton. A lift in class might not prevent Allakasam from being a major contender again. Her strong finish to win the President’s Handicap on Tuesday left the impression that two miles could be well within her range. There will also be solid backing for Bon Coeur, Bourbon Lad and the Templeton stablemates, Yankee Dandy and Epona. Bon Coeur was only half a length and half a neck from Epona on Tuesday night and might have finished closer with a better run in the straight. Bourbon Lad raced well on the first night for a third and a first —his victory coming against the sprinters in the Franz Josef Glacier Handicap.

Yankee Dandy was run down by Epona, Guyfa and Bon Coeur after trying for an all-the-way win in the Victoria Park Raceway Handicap. For that victory Epona has gone back to 36 yards but in her present form that might not prevent her from winning her third race on end. Consistent The consistent Thunderina might be the popular fancy for the Golden Coast Handicap, second leg of the main double. Thunderina beat all but Aliakasam in the President’s Handicap on Tuesday night. Other sound runs close up on her record were a third to Guyfa and Shadydale at Reefton and a win over 13 furlongs—the distance of the Golden Coast Handicap—at Westport on December 27. The hardest for Thunderina to beat might be Quality Inn, also a winner at Westport and a minor place-getter in his two races on Tuesday. Lornaway and Set Sail, both minor place-getters on the first

night, and Scottish Advance, which won the lone race for improvers on Tuesday, make most appeal of the others.

There will be a double for course patrons only on the Okarito and Lake Matheson Handicaps. Super Dawn and Orient Belle might be the successful combination. Justurina was scratched yesterday from the Lake Matheson Handicap. After heavy rain yesterday morning there was a break in the weather later in the day. But the forecast is for further showers so the track could again be easy.
