Polar Plateau Breakdown

After a ski-equipped Hercules aircraft had landed high on the Antarctic plateau early yesterday it was found that an engine starter motor shaft had broken.

The aircraft was being used to assist with the establishment of the Plateau station, at a height of 11,500 ft about 600 miles from the Pole Station, in the heart of Queen Maud Land. When the breakdown was reported to McMurdo Station a spare part was flown in on the next plane, and e " : neers, working in the cold at high altitude, fitted the replacement

By 3 p.m. yesterday the Hercules was on its way back to McMurdo.
