RATIONING OF BEER

AUCKLAND, Dec. 29.
Some Auckland hotels are experiencing a shortage of beer bottled by a brewery here. A few hotels have sold out of its bottled beer and others have only just been able to meet the Christmas demand. The hardest-hit by the shortage are the hotels with a big bottle department trade, mostly in the suburbs. Hotel licensees reported today that they have been on a quota, based on last year’s supplies, from the brewery. The marketing manager of the brewery concerned, Mr W. J. Whineray, said it had to impose bottled beer quotas because “the demand has far outstripped our production capacity.” Quotas had operated in the South Island since February, in the North Island outside the Auckland province since April 1, and in the Auckland area since August, he sail.
