PLATEAU STATION, ANTARCTICA.—Captain V. D. Bursik, U.S.N., planting the United States flag on the site of Plateau Station. Next to the station flag is Lieutenant J. L. Gowan, Medical Corps, U.S.N., who is in charge of the station. Plateau Station is on the rim of the polar plateau. Captain Bursik and Lieutenant Gowan stepped out of the ski-equipped Hercules, City of Christchurch, to become the first men to set foot on this part of the continent. Captain Bursik is deputy commander, and chief of staff to the commander, United States Naval Support Force, Antarctica. The new station was established on December 13.
