M.C.C. Race To Victory

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

ADELAIDE.

The M.C.C. raced to a great sixwicket win over South Australia at Adelaide yesterday, scoring 270 runs in 156 minutes.

After a generous declaration by the state captain, L. FavelL the M.C.C. responded lustily to the challenge of scoring 269 to win in 193 minutes.

R. W. Barber (77) and G. Boycott (58) put on 138 runs in 79 minutes for the first wicket, and M. C. Cowdrey (63 not out) and B. R. Knight (46) added 85 in 41 minutes for the fourth wicket. In 39.3 overs bowled during the M.C.C.’s second innings, not a single maiden was recorded, it was exhilarating cricket, and a tonic result for the M.C.C. on the eve of the second test match, which starts in Melbourne tomorrow.

Earlier, I. Chappell had made 113 not out for South Australia.

Cowdrey In Form

The brightest feature of the day to English eyes was Cowdrey’s return to form. He did not resort to blind hitting, but was massively and soberly in control throughout his innings, timing his strokes excellently.

At the wicket for 73 minutes, Cowdrey hit five boundaries.

Barber made the bowling look mediocre with flowing cuts, drives and pulls. Boycott, excellent in drives off the back foot, was also in splendid form.

Both fell at 138, Boycott beaten by D. Sincock’s spin ! and Barber caught at deep mid-off from a mishit off Chappell. Chappell dismissed P. H. Parfitt only 14 runs later, but Cowdrey and Knight then took over to keep the M.C.C. on the victory path. Barber had seven fours in his 77, scored in 81 minutes, and Boycott six boundaries in 58 runs made in 79 minutes. Knight, 46 in 41 minutes, hit five boundaries. I South Australia added 132 I runs for the loss of two wickets yesterday in its second innings. Chappel hit 14 . fours in his 113 not out, made . in three and a half hours, and later he was South Australia’s most successful bowler with two for 58. SOUTH AUSTRALIA (First Innings 459/7 dec.)
