EAST COAST ’QUAKE
(N.Z. Press Association) WHAKATANE, Dec. 20. Residents of Taneatua ran into the streets this morning when a sharp earthquake shook the town soon after 9.45 a.m. Bottles and packages were shaken from shop shelves and one chimney demolished. No injuries have been reported. Several shopkeepers said the ’quake was the sharpest they had known in Taneatua. They said there was no preceding rumble but simply one sharp jolt A milk bar proprietor said four dozen bottles of soft drink in'' his shop were smashed and sweets and chocolates scattered about the floor. Other shops reported minor damage. Glasses tumbled off a cabinet and a picture was shaken from a wall in a Kawerau home.
Christmas Play.—A Christmas play, “The Nativity,” by Father John Weir, will have its ninety-third production at the Returned Services* Association’s premises in Gloucester street this evening. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr H. P. Smith) will attend the production. The play will also be performed at the Richmond Working Men’s Club on Thursday night
