Water Reticulation For Kaiapoi Area Proposed
Tentative proposals for the water reticulation of the builtup area at an estimated cost of £85,000 were put to the Kaiapoi Borough Council on Monday night The Town Clerk (Mr N. E. Clemens) was asked to report on the best way of getting the wishes of the Monte. The council's consulting engineers, Messrs Davis, Son, Ogilvie, and Associates, had made a preliminary survey for the scheme, the works committee reported.
On the basis of a full domestic and firefighting supply, they estimated the cost of weUs, storage and pumping plant at £25,000, plus £60,000 for the reticulation of 1010 chains of street More investigation would be needed before a complete report could be made.
Reliance on wells and lack of a high-pressure supply had held up development of the town, said Cr. R. L. Wylie. "The estimate is only a quick one," said Cr. L. V. T. McEwen. “The scheme may cost £120,000, but at that, it would be well worth while.”
When the Town Clerk reported that building permits had slumped last month to a total value of £1306, as against £0606 in November 1960, it was agreed in general discusaion that completion of the northern motoeway and the water reticulation would
cause a boom in Kaiapoi. Sawdust—“lt’s everywhere, in shops and houses, and all over the road,” said Cr. McEwen, supporting a dadftytoaaklatapaifcmnaia.
