Complaints Of Speeding, Noise In Kairaki Area

Concern at what was termed excessive speeding and careless driving of cars and motor-cycles in the Pines Beach-Kairaki Beach area was expressed to the Kaiapoi' Borough Council on Monday night in a letter from the Pines Beach Country Women's Institute.

A similar complaint was received from the Pines Beach Association, which referred especially to the noise caused by motor-cyclists in the lagoon area.

The Women’s Institute also supported this and said that at week-ends and holidays, motor cyclists sped round the lagoon, often all day, and were a serious danger to picnickers.

“It is only by chance that so far no children have been killed or Injured,” the letter continued. “Another bad danger area is the new road leading out to the bathing sheds and the sea. We understand that if signs were put up, the traffic department could take action.” Inspector’s View Some roads in the area were not dedicated, and some were in the Rangiora county, said the Town Cleric (Mr N. E. Clemens). The Inspector has paid a good deal of attention to the area and thinks traffic there is well behaved, he added. “Gangs race round the lagoon at 50 miles an hour,” said Cr. F. R. Clemett “They are not all bombs, but some good dads’ cars running round in the sand. The women would like authority for their husbands ,to try to restrain the youths.” There’re well out of the road there, and if you block them off, they are going to roar round Kaiapoi,” said Cr. W. E. Bell.

The Mayor (Mr H. O. Hills) said Rangiora had ignored a request for a road speed limit. If there was trouble, and there had been a lot of complaints, the council should act Cr. R. L. Wylie said that further down the beach was a good area where youths could let off steam. Cr. T. M. Ayers said the police had been called to Kairaki at 2 am. on Saturday to break up a mob of youths with cars and motor cycles.

The council decided to seek the help of the Rangiora County Council, and Cr. R. Monk was authorised to make further Inquiries.
