Sports Centre For College

The Lincoln College board of governors yesterday approved in principle a plan for providing the college with a sports centre. The college principal (Dr. M. M. Burns) told the board that the plan was based on one which had been produced for toe University of Hull, Yorkshire. The student body had broadly approved of the Dian, he said. He suggested to the board that it should approve toe plan in principal and then seek approval from the University Grants Committee.

“However, since the idea of a sports centre was first suggested the cost has risen from £17,000 to £47,000, then to £80,000,” he said. The modified United Kingdom plan before the board yesterday was suitable for handling from 1000 to 5000 people and would meet ail the long-term needs of the college. Dr. Burns said that he would not be at all surprised if the same basic plan from the University of Hull was considered for the University of Canterbury. The sports centre would include provision for badminton, weight-lifting, a gymnasium and squash courts and galleries, with possible future extensions of the squash courts, and provision of a swimming pool.
