ADVENTURE AHEAD
"The Presi" Special Service
WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. A young Wellington man who has been attacked by pirates, fired on by the United States Army, shipwrecked and almost drowned twice in typhoons, is willing to “go through it all again.” Mr T. J. Corkill, aged 22, of Roseneath will leave Wellington for Australia on December 30 seeking more adventure.
In Brisbane he will have his first look at a 25ft trimaran which he hopes will take him round the world. The trimaran has been de-
signed mainly as a week-end cruiser or daysailer, but this has not discouraged Mr Corkill. With another Wellington man, Mr B. Willis, of Strathmore Park, Mr Corkill last year sailed from Japan to the Philippines where their 25ft sloop was stolen and stripped by pirates. After being marooned on an island for some weeks, they worked their way home as seamen on a Swedish ship. Before that, they had been fired on by United States forces when they accidentally entered a peninsula firing range at Okinawa. In spite of being troubled by tropical ulcers on his legs and frightening memories of typhoons and pirates, Mr Corkill said the adventure of another cruise had again made him restless. For nine months, he laboured in the South Island as a tunneller to have money to buy the trimaran. About January 10 he hopes to sail around the Australian coast before going to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Japan. His main problem, he said, would be seasickness.
