OVERHEAD RAILWAY

Hastings Plan Abandoned t (N.Z. Prtit AMoeiotion) HASTINGS, Dec. 20. Citizens of Hastings have reacted favourably to the Hastings City Council's decision to scrap a proposal for a £1,250,000 to £1,500,000 overhead railway through the main business area. Citizens would prefer a pedestrian subway beneath the railway line. Most believe the subway idea to be more realistic and cheaper than the overhead railway, which would mean an increase in rates of 35 per cent. The council also proposes pedestrian precincts in the two central blocks of the business area, the closing of some streets for through wheeled traffic, the limiting of others to oneway traffic, and a covered shopping arcade.
