DANGER TO CHILDREN

Akaroa Council Concerned

The Akaroa County Council is concerned that school children at Duvauchelle may suffer further injury if adequate footpaths are not provided for them. The council was told yesterday that about 20 children who lived at the eastern end of the township had to walk along a dangerous verge along the main highway to get to school.

Recently one child had been frightened by a following vehicle and ridden her bicycle over a six-foot drop on to some rocks in the bay. She had suffered a broken arm and concussion.

Another child had been thrown from a horse and landed on the rocks.

The county engineer (Mr J D. Annan) said the safety of the children depended on the provision of a footpath with protection from the traffic. It was no use trying to force them to walk in single file along a narrow verge. The council will seek finance from the Ministry of Works to level the retaining wall along the bay and extend the footpath.

A letter from the Ministry of Works read at yesterday’s meeting said the work could be subsidised on a three-for-four basis.
