Fishplates Not Made To Specifications

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 4. The Railways Department cannot use 40,000 track fishplates ordered from an English manufacturer because they do not meet the department’s specifications.

The order is understood to be worth £20,000.

Fishplates are steel bars used to bolt together lengths of rail.

The recent order may have to be returned to England to be brought up to specifications. Negotiations are going on between the department and the manufacturer.

A railways official said in Auckland today that the department had met similar cases before of equipment not being to standard. These involved other countries than Britain. A representative of the manufacturer had flown out to New Zealand to look into the matter.
