High Street

Sir, —Congratulations are due to the Civic Trust for their High street project. Christchurch might be a beautiful and a better city to live in,. to work in or to attract visitors from the country and overseas if the fine plan for High street matures and is begun sincerely in the present—not shelved to some vague future. The first benefit would be to

block tearing-through heavy traffic. This could begin the much-needed central air clean-up and right use of pedestrian shopping and rest areas now usurped by vehicular travellers as a hurrythrough convenience where back streets could better serve their purpose of speed. If a city is for people to enjoy along with occupation, many cases similar to the present suggestion should provide happy solutions to the present congestion and annoyances. Some of the past unfortunate blunders might be mitigated by revival of the civic heart.—Yours, etc., ENGENDER HEALTH. October 19, 1965.
