Political Ban Imposed

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) DJAKARTA, Oct. 17. Indonesia’s highest policy-making body yesterday banned all activities by political groups involved in the September 30 coup attempt against President Sukarno.

Diplomatic observers said the temporary suspension could be a prelude to outlawing the Indonesian Communist Party (P.K.1.) and its affiliated organisations. The order was issued by the Supreme Operations Command and was signed by Brigadier General Sutjipto, although Dr. Sukarno heads the command and usually issues such orders. Dr. Sukarno met his cabinet on Friday and the Minister of Information, MajorGeneral Achmadi, said afterwards the President had said that the “destruction and burning” in the capital must stop before he can solve the political crisis stemming from the attempted coup. ARMY CAMPAIGN

The Army, which crushed the coup, has launched an anti-Communist campaign and this has led to almost daily anti-Communist demonstrations.

Last week, Moslem youths burned the Communist Party headquarters and on Thursday demonstrators burned down the pro-Peking Chinese University. At least 30 persons were wounded when

demonstrators clashed with Chinese students.

A Djakarta newspaper has reported that the Communist Party leader, Dipa Nusantara Aidit, was arrested three days ago in the Jogjakarta area of central Java. There has been no official confirmation of his arrest.

Mr Aidit is believed to have been grouping his followers in central Java for organised resistance against the Djakarta Government. NEW PARTY

Dr. Sukarno has opposed the Army’s anti-Communist campaign. A Government official said the President is considering creating a new Communist Party to replace the present Peking-oriented one. The official indicated that this was the political solution envisaged by Dr. Sukarno. Army-controlled newspapers and speakers at anti-Commu-nist rallies, however, are already warning against the creation of a new Communist Party.
