CHILDREN’S THEATRE
Malthouse As Premises
The Canterbury Children’s Theatre has at last found a suitable place in which to establish its permanent headquarters. The old malt house by the Colombo street bridge over the Heathcote has been chosen, and was bought recently for £3BOO.
It will be used immediately for storage and later for rehearsals, and for a small experimental theatre. The need for permanent premises has become greater in the last few years, as the theatre feels that young people should be given an opportunity to take part in productions. This has not been possible before, as such a long-term scheme would need suitable premises, and it is felt that the old malthouse will be admirably suited to this purpose. The malthouse is on a section of 45 perches, with ample space for off-street parking. It is built of stone, and although reputed to be 100 years old is in excellent repair.
Part of the building is let to a builder, but the Children’s Theatre will have the use of 13,000 sq. ft.
