MAIREHAU H.S.

Prefabricated Classrooms

Three prefabricated classrooms would be provided for the 1966 school year, said a letter from the Education Department which was read at the monthly meeting of the Mairehau High School board of governors yesterday. Third-form enrolments showed an increase on previous years, said the headmaster (Mr A. B. Ryan), and the estimated roll for next year was 800. Provision of an additional laboratory and extensions to the library space and staffroom would also be required to accommodate a heavier roll.

Construction of permanent accommodation to meet a further increase in the roll in 1967 was essential, said Mr Ryan. He suggested that the board should apply for an additional block. The siting of this block, together with a free-standing library, would require careful planning. The board agreed to invite a member of the department’s building staff to attend its next meeting to acquaint it with the development schedules for schools such as Mairehau. Exploratory Course Third-form entrants in 1966 would not be placed in their courses until an eight weeks’ general exploratory course had been completed, said Mr Ryan. Results of the usual entrance tests and the pupils’ reports would also be scrutinised, but it was hoped that the exploratory course would sort the pupils into more appropriate vocational courses, said Mr Ryan. There had been some difficulty in the past, particularly with entrants to the commercial course, which was mistakenly regarded as an easy one. School Fair

Plans for a barbecue fair on Saturday week were well advanced, said Mr Ryan. Proceeds would go to the gymnasium fund. Already £2OOO was In hand for this, and he was confident that construction would begin early next year.
