Zoo Elephant Dies
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 3. Jamuna, the Auckland Zoo’s 58-year-old elephant which, since 1923, has earned more than 750,000 children, died at 3 a.m. today. The cause appears to have been a fever.
Her energy had gradually disappeared with recurring chills, rheumatism and foot complaints aggravated by her great weight, five tons, said the zoo director, Mr D. Wood.
“I know we are all sad here this morning,” said Mr Wood ‘‘Jamuna was the zoo’s oldest inhabitant and we feel like we’ve lost an old friend. I’m sure that many thousands of people feel the same way.”
