Move To Organise Soccer Pools

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. The New Zealand Football Association council decided tonight to ask other national sports bodies to support the introduction of football pools in New Zealand. A council member, Mr S. Guppy, said that while previous applications to organise pools had met with faUure they might find rather more sympathy from Government members and officials. “With extension of lotteries,

it seems that the Government is more favourable to these means of raising funds for various sports and public amenities than it was in the past,” he said. He said that £508,984 in 5s postal orders had been sold in 1963 and last year. Most were sent to English football pools. “Would it not be sounder for this amount to be used in New Zealand to provide sports facilities for this country, particularly for thousands of schoolchildren and teenagers?”

If the N.Z.F.A. were given permission to conduct pools the profits would be ploughed back into the game and a percentage would be given to other sports bodies.
