HOSPITAL SUBWAY
Tenders To Be Called
Tenders are to be called soon for the pedestrian and services subway to link the North Canterbury Hospital Board's property in Tuam street with the Christchurch Hospital. It will be for the use of hospital staff only, and will also carry the main steam pipe from the new boilerhouse.
“I hope the public will be forbearing about any dislocation caused at the corner,” said the chairman of the board (Dr. L. C. L. Averill), yesterday. “We may be able to do it in two parts—first under Tuam street and then through part of the St. Andrew's Church grounds before crossing under Oxford terrace.” Mr L. A. Bennett, the chairman of the works committee, said the Health Department had given the board authority to proceed with the work. The contractors had promised to supply steam from the boilerhouse by March'3l next year, but the board might be optimistic in hoping for the subway to be ready by then. If it were not, temporary measures would be sought for getting steam across to the hospital.
